Rio Comp Crew Readies for Head of the American
October 20, 2013

Rio's competitive crew has been hard at work this fall, preparing for its road-trip-regatta of the fall, the Head of the American in Sacramento, on Saturday, October 26. This is the first time Rio has attended this particular regatta, although a crew of women attended the Gold Rush Regatta in 2012, which is held on the same water, Lake Natoma (the American River)

As at the Okie O'Connor Hot Head, Rio will once again be sporting an array of boats and crews, once again displaying their versatility for such a small contingent. Rio will post entries in ten events, several with two entries:

Men's Master 4x

Women's Masters 2x - two entries

Women's Masters 4+ - two entries

Men's open 1x

Women's Open 4x

Men's Masters 2x - two entries

Women's Masters 1x

Mixed Masters 2x

Women's Masters 8+

Mixed Masters 4x

Head races are usually between 4 km and 10 km, and are a race against the clock. Boats leave the start in 10-15 second intervals, and race the course. The crew with the fastest time in its age category is delcared the winner of that category. Among the most well-known head races are the 4.25-mile, Head of the River Race that takes place each March on the river Thames in London, and the 3.20-mile, Head of the Charles race held each October on the Charles River in Boston.

"Head" races are named thus because they are often held on rivers. (This may be contrary to the popular belief of some rowers, who think it's because they spend a great deal of time in their heads during a race of such length!)

The Head of the American is on a portion of the river that has been dammed up for recreational use, and turned into a state park: Lake Natoma, in Nimbus State Park. The course itself is a fairly straight one, with the warm-up to the start line paralleling the entire length of the course. In essence, the start and finish lines are at opposite ends of the lake - and five thousand meters apart!

Best of luck to everyone, and GO RIO!

Show
Race results not the only measure of a regatta's success
What is a regatta if not a challenge? A rower needs to meet the physical demands of the racing, and the physical and mental demands of travelling with a crew and its boats. There’s always something new and different to learn at each one: no two are ever alike. And so it went at the Head of the American on Saturday, October 26. In a regatta that featured its largest-ever number of entries, there was no shortage of experiences!

Rio immediately took on the challenge by entering 13 races, with 20 rowers. There were 1x’s, 2x’s, 4x’s, 4+’s, and an 8+. In the midst all of those entries and races, Rio only managed to lose one skeg (the 8+), one bow number (the mixed 2x), and scratch one race (couldn’t hot-seat into the W4x fast enough)! The closest to the finish line in first was a third place by the Men’s 4x (well done, fellas!), but no one finished dead last – and everyone who started a race, finished.

Though the on-water results could arguably been better, the actual results of a race and regatta aren’t always reflected in the finish times.

“I had a great time at the Head of the American, and it was a lot of fun to race with the team and support others during their races. It was a great venue and it madeall the early mornings and meters worth it!! I'm looking forward to the next regatta and I'm motivated to train harder and better!”

– Kent, member of the bronze-winning Men’s Masters 4x.

Pam had a similar experience, and summed it up this way: “I love the camaraderie and support the RIo Rowing Team gives each other. Helping to launch, rig and de-rig everyone's boats, and cheering. I felt very supported. Everyone just wants to help each other do his or her best in their race.

I did not bring home any medals, but I did my best and pulled my hardest for the team. I am proud of that and proud to be a member of this team. Now I am motivated to get faster and stronger for the next regatta. Sprint season, here we come!”

If you’re up for the challenge, sprint season begins on March 9, 2014, right here on Tempe Town Lake, with the Desert Sprints.

Show

Can Do Crew rows with Wounded Warrior Project
Rio Salado Rowing Club begins a 12-week program with the Wounded Warrior Project to host a rowing program for veterans. The program begins with several weeks on the erg, to acquaint the Warriors with the rowing stroke, and after four weeks of on-water rowing, concludes on "National Learn to Row Day" with a graduation "celebration". The goals of this program are similar to those of any of Rio's rowing programs: to create a "team" environment, promote physical activity, and have a chance to learn a new skill. And of course, the hope is that many of the Warriors will get hooked on rowing, and become Rio members!

"Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) serves veterans and service members who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness, or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2001 and their families. With the mission to honor and empower Wounded Warriors, WWP is the hand extended to encourage warriors as they adjust to their new normal and achieve new triumphs. Offering a variety of programs and services, WWP is equipped to serve warriors with every type of injury – from the physical to the invisible wounds of war.

Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) takes a holistic approach when serving warriors and their families to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement. Rio LOVES California!
The Rio Crew successfully competed in another California regatta last weekend at the San Diego Fall Classic. Racing 13 entries in nine events, the Crew returned six medals, two of them gold! Both the Women’s and Men’s 8+’s took bronze, the Mixed 4x got gold, Men’s 4+ came home with the silver, the Women’s 4+ raced to gold, and one of the Mixed 8+’s brought home a bronze.

Bling is wonderful, but it’s the regatta and racing experiences that actually produce the rewards. Dam Debris Closes Lake!
Wednesday, March 1

1:00 p.m

Tempe, AZ

Tempe Town Lake will be closed for boating and water activities due to a large amount of debris coming from the upper Salt River. The debris started to arrive at the lake around 6 a.m. today.

Salt River Project is releasing water at a higher rate. As a result, the growth in the riverbed is being carried by the faster-moving water. Flows are currently estimated at about 10,000 cubic feet per second. It is expected that this flow will increase this week, but expected flow rates are far below the more than 200,000 cubic feet per second that the Tempe Town Lake Dam can accommodate. The closure of the water for recreational use is due to the debris that is floating.

These flows are a result of this year’s heavy snow in northern Arizona and heavy rainfall. The dam is working as it should.

The lake will be closed for water activities including fishing until the flow of debris has passed. We will send out notification of the reopening. The park areas surrounding the lake are still open and no land-based activities will be affected. The parks are safe and people are welcome to enjoy their regular land-based activities at Tempe Town Lake.

Show

Jim Willis, former Rio Coach, passes away Sadly, we learned of the recent passing of Jim Willis, a former Rio coach and friend to the Tempe Town Lake rowing community. This brief bio was prepared by a rowing colleague of Jim's, Mike Cook, and he has graciously shared it with us.

**********************

Jim rowed for his prep school Phillips Exeter Academy, where he and his crew competed at the Royal Henley Regatta. Jim then matriculated to Dartmouth College often regaling stories of rowing with frozen fingers. By this time rowing was firmly instilled in Jim's life and continued to be a tremendous part of his life. After moving to Los Angeles, Jim work at USC while coaching the freshman men’s crew. In the mid-‘70’s, Jim along with rower Janet Miller founded the USC Women’s Crew.

Jim rowed for Long Beach Rowing Association where he started the infamous “Motley Crew” rowing team in the late 70’s and 80’s. His Motley Crew was made up of an ad-hoc mix of available ex-Olympic oarsmen and /or ex-USA team oarsman and competed at such events as the Head of the Harbor and Head of the Charles, maybe even the San Diego Crew Classic.

Jim worked virtually every San Diego Crew Classic, from the very first until his health precluded him from making the trip from his home in Phoenix, AZ. There, he could typically be found calculating and verifying race times at the finish line along with his good friend, the late Duke Robinson.

Jim retired to Phoenix after a long career in telecommunications. He was responsible for developing Alaska's telephone system, and also developed critical software for the 411 information operators (remember those) who were able to almost instantaneously find telephone numbers for the 411 callers.

Jim continued his volunteer crew efforts even in retirement by coaching and mentoring rowers and coaches at Rio Salado Rowing Club, and Arizona State University. He also volunteered with the Tempe Rowers Association regatta committee, and you could find him under an officials tent at both the Desert Sprints and Hot Head regattas, virtually every year.

Thanks for being here, Jim. We will miss you.

Jim's sister, Anne Willis Peck can be reached via email at awp31max@gmail.com, for those who would like to share their condolences.

Show
