Tempe Town Lake Events 4/4 to 4/10 By: Jennifer Blatt

April 1, 2014

Per Alicia Jerger, City of Tempe:

Friday 4/4: 9am-12:30pm The USA Triathlon Association (USAT) will be holding a draft legal tri. In addition, that afternoon they will also host a Practice Swim on the same course as the draft legal event. The practice swim will be from 12:30pm-1:30pm.  The swim course will be between Mill  Ave Bridges and the Rail bridges. The athletes will be doing laps on a 750m course. Boat Beach users please be alert landing and launching from the beach. The lake area west of Mill will only be used for landing and launching, not for any regular practice. That must be done east of Mill Ave.

AccessRoad Closure from 7am until 12:30pm:
Boat Beach: This is a draft legal Tri so the packs of riders will be thick. The 20K Bike course is 4 laps over a 5K course which Lakeview Drive is in the center of. Lakeview Dr. will be closed in all directions, except for the stretch on West Lakeview Dr. from Washington to the Marquee Parking Lot. If you are planning on using Boat Beach, that is your access area. Use the Marquee Lot and please be careful carrying your boat across Lakeview at the bottom of the hill. There will be volunteers helping direct, but the bikers will have right of way. Again your only access will be from the west to Lakeview Dr. West.
Marina: No Impact as far as access goes.

Sat, 4/5: 7:30am to 12:30pm: The USAT will be holding the Intercollegiate Triathlon Championships. The swim course map is attached.

AccessRoad Closure from 6:30am until 1:30pm: This is a Collegiate National Championship Tri so there will be a lot of participants.
Boat Beach: If you are planning on using Boat Beach, your only access will be from the west on the 202 exiting at Center Parkway and turning right (east) on Curry to Lakeview Dr. West.  You can also come from the north on Mill, turn west (right)  on Curry and U-Turn at Center Parkway. Use the main lot rather than the Marquee Lot and please be careful carrying your boat across Lakeview at the bottom of the hill. There will be volunteers helping direct, but the bikers will have right of way. Again your only access will be from the west to Lakeview Dr. West or from the north with U-Turns involved..
Marina: Marina access will only be from the east off of Scottsdale/Rural take Gilbert or Curry to the Marina. 202 exits in both directions will be open at Rural/Scottsdale, but only exiting to the north which will take you to the marina via Gilbert of Curry.
When leaving the Marina you will be able to take College north once you cross Curry, as biking on College will be restricted to the southbound side of the street.

Sat. 4/5: 4:00pm – 6: 00pm: The USAT will be hosting a tri relay. The swim course map is here:

AccessRoad Closure from 1:30pm until 6:00pm:
Boat Beach: This is a relay Tri so the packs of riders will be more spaced out, and drafting is not allowed so it will be individual riders rather than packs. The course set up will be the same as the Friday AM race.

Sunday April 6th-Open Water Swim-This is an annual swim that takes place on the north side of the lake at the boat ramp east of the volleyball courts. The swim begins at 8:15am and the swimmers will be mostly on the north side of the lake. Keep an eye out for the buoys to mark the course. The event will conclude around 10am. Keep an eye out for swimmers when returning to boat beach.

Thursday, April 10, the opening Spring Splash and Dash Series, 5:30pm – 7:00pm: This will be the first of 4 in the Spring race series. The event will restrict Boating in the area of the north event boat ramp, and will have some impact on Marina parking, especially the west lot.
