Advanced Sculling Camp – Mario Cunha

This is an advanced single scull camp designed specifically for rowers who want to focus on the technical skills needed for more advanced or competitive rowers. Designed for athletes who have rowed consistently for at least two years, have competent boat handling skills and can row safely in a racing single without constant supervision. You must also be able to launch and recover your boat independently and, if you flip, either re-enter the boat or swim it to shore. Registrants should have advanced rowing skills and the fitness to maintain high stroke ratings for at least six minutes. Though not a requirement, this camper should able to comfortably row a 5:00 minute 1k on the water.

From Zimbabwean schoolboy cox to international rowing coach, rowing has been a transformative passion for Mario. Starting in 1985, Mario found rowing to be an escape, leading the school team to a national championship. After graduating, Mario returned to coach at three top private schools, guiding over 40 students to regional titles. Mario’s coaching prowess extended beyond Zimbabwe, leading the Junior World Championships team to Germany and the All Africa Games team to Botswana. Annual trips to Canada for the Royal Canadian Henley further cemented Mario’s international experience. With FISA 1 and 2, as well as British Level 2 coaching qualifications, Mario takes immense joy in helping crews reach their full potential, witnessing their triumphs and growth as they overcome physical and mental obstacles.
