Intro to Rowing

For people who have never rowed on the water, start here! This class takes place over either three or four days, depending on the season, and is designed to provide you with the basic understanding and skills of rowing.

New for 2024If you complete all three intro sessions you can row in our Level 1 program free of charge for an additional 2 months (a $240 value).

  • You must complete and submit a float test prior to your first session. Many city pools (such as Tempe’s Kiwanis Recreation Center) and private gyms (such as Lifetime Fitness) will administer float tests. Email your completed test form to our Intro Coordinator or bring it with you to the first session. No one is allowed in a boat without a float test, and Rio cannot offer refunds if you arrive without one.
  • You must also be able to
    • Lift 20-25 pounds and carry it on one shoulder while walking for 5 minutes
    • Complete a full squat, down and up
    • Bend over and touch your hands to your knees or lower
    • Walk up and down one flight of stairs without using the handrail

Rio’s COVID-19 policy currently makes masks optional for fully vaccinated rowers.

Subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Check your email often as you approach your session date.
